The Norman Conquest

The event

The Norman Conquest changed Anglo-Saxon Norwich forever. Investigate the Conquest by examining and assessing Norman and Anglo-Saxon weapons and war tactics. Compare and contrast Anglo-Saxon and Norman society, explain how and why the Castle was built, and use quill and ink to translate and copy a local Domesday Book entry. This event was previously called William I: Hero or Villain?.

Learning outcomes

  • Know and understand how the Normans shaped and influenced this nation.
  • Understand historical concepts such as continuity and change, cause and consequence, and similarity, difference and significance. Use them to make connections and draw contrasts between Anglo-Saxon and Norman Britain.
  • Understand the methods of historical enquiry, including how evidence is used rigorously to make historical claims, and discern how and why contrasting arguments and interpretations of the past have been constructed by Anglo-Saxon and Norman sources.
  • Gain historical perspective by placing growing knowledge into different contexts, understanding the connections between Norwich, East Anglian, British and European history, between cultural, economic, military, political, religious and social history, and between short- and long-term timescales.
