KS3 William I: Hero or Villain?

Essential information

Maximum group size 60, £5 per pupil, 10am until 2pm, minimum fee £200 

The event

The Norman Conquest changed Saxon Norwich forever. Investigate both sides of the Conquest by examining and assessing Norman and Saxon weapons and war tactics. Compare and contrast Saxon and Norman society, explain how and why the Castle was built, and use quill and ink to translate and copy a local Domesday Book entry. At the end of the day, form a judgement on William the Conqueror.

Learning outcomes

  • Know and understand how William I shaped this nation and how Britain has been influenced by the Normans.
  • Understand historical concepts such as continuity and change, cause and consequence, and similarity, difference and significance. Use them to make connections and draw contrasts between Saxon and Norman Britain.
  • Understand the methods of historical enquiry, including how evidence is used rigorously to make historical claims, and discern how and why contrasting arguments and interpretations of the past have been constructed by Saxon and Norman sources.
  • Gain historical perspective by placing growing knowledge into different contexts, understanding the connections between Norwich, East Anglian, British and European history, between cultural, economic, military, political, religious and social history, and between short- and long-term timescales.
