KS3 Crime and Punishment

Maximum group size 60, £6 per pupil (£6.50 from 1 September 2026), minimum fee £240 (£260 from 1 September 2026), 10am until 2pm.

The event

Norwich Castle has been a prison for most of its existence. Take a tour of the museum's Georgian former prison buildings, study real and replica punishment objects in the dungeons, and re-enact the trial of James Blomfield Rush, accused of double murder in 1849.

Please note: the dungeons are not wheelchair-accessible and have steps and uneven flooring throughout.

Aims and learning outcomes

• Examine real implements of punishment to see and get a feel for how punishments through time have changed.
• Describe and explain 19th century prison reform.
• Describe continuities and changes to trials and punishments from c.500AD to the present day.
