KS2 Anglo-Saxons and Vikings: A Norseman's Tale

Essential information

Maximum group size 120, £6 per pupil (£6.50 from 1 September 2026), minimum fee £240 (£260 from 1 September 2026), 10am until 2pm.

The event

The sun is setting on the hall of Anglo-Saxon thegn Hrothgar and his wife Wealhtheow. Egil, a Norseman or Viking, arrives at the hall, hoping to be accepted into the household. However, one member of the household is suspicious of the Norseman. Should we trust Egil or send him away? Take part in a range of hands-on activities related to Anglo-Saxon and Viking life and culture, and help the thegn decide what should be done with Egil.

The day consists of four activities led by museum staff:

  • Meet the thegn and explore the heroic tale of Beowulf through storytelling and drama.
  • Meet Tostig, the thegn's servant, and handle real and replica objects. What do the objects tell us about the Norseman who has arrived at the hall?
  • Meet Egil the Norseman and explore the Anglo-Saxon and Viking gallery, looking for precious things. Discover differences in culture between the two groups and find out what it means to be a Viking.
  • Visit the battlements and discover the origins of the city of Norwich by finding clues to Norwich's Anglo-Saxon past in the buildings and landmarks. There will be alternative activities if the battlements are closed due to bad weather. The battlements are wheelchair-accessible.

Aims and learning outcomes:

  • Understand how primary sources are used to gather evidence about people's lives in the past
  • Engage children with museum objects as sources of inspiration, knowledge and exploration
  • Expand children's understanding of the origins of Anglo-Saxon and Viking beliefs and customs
